Black liquor is an industrial side-product of paper mills, produced from wood. At CP2M, catalytic alkaline oxidation of black liquor was carried out employing CuO/TiO2 catalyst in a trickle bed reactor under mild reaction conditions (150–200 °C, 80 bar) and short contact times (4–9 minutes). Phenolic monomers were obtained (total yield 6.2 wt %), among which was vanillin (yield 3.3 wt %), which represented 53 wt % of monomers. These results were published in Industrial Engineering & Chemistry Research in May 2022"
