Summary : Vitrimers, invented in 2011, are a class of polymers in-between thermoplastics and thermosets. These polymers exhibit dynamic covalent crosslinking, relying on highly temperature-dependent chemical equilibrium. At high temperatures or in the presence of catalysts, the exchange reactions are fast enough to allow a large-scale reorganization of the network and thus a plastic deformation of the polymer. They enable to foresee easy recycling and reuse of plastics in many applications. We intend to incorporate these vitrimers into pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) by using miniemulsion polymerization. These adhesives are non-reactive networks of soft, viscoelastic polymers which adhesion mechanism is mainly based on damping phenomena. These adhesives are widely used in our everyday life, ranging from labels, Post it©, to the automotive field and are arousing growing interest among industrial companies due to their ease of use, and their environmental, health and safety benefits.    


The internship is part of a collaborative project involving several laboratories and aims at synthesizing formulating, and characterizing pressure sensitive vitrimer adhesives. The use of vitrimers will allow to crosslink dynamically the adhesives and thus to improve their elastic properties.

Depending on the skills and motivations of the student, this internship may combine synthesis and characterization of vitrimer latexes (DLS, RMN, FTIR, SEC, DSC) as well as the study of their viscoelastic and adhesive properties through rheology or tensile testing. Duration : 5 to 6 months, starting February/March 2023.

Student’s profile : M2 (or equivalent) student having a good practical and synthetic spirit, curious and eager to learn new topics, especially physico-chemistry of polymers.
